Tory Island

A remote island with its own king and painting tradition

Tory Island lies about 12 kilometres off Donegal's northwest coast and is one of Ireland's most remote inhabited islands. It still has its own informal "king" (Rí Thoraí) and is an Irish-speaking Gaeltacht community with a distinctive tradition of naive painting. In Irish mythology, Tory Island is associated with the Fomorians and their leader Balor.
