Kylemore Abbey in Connemara was built between 1867 and 1871 as a private castle for the politician and businessman Mitchell Henry and his wife Margaret, and stands picturesquely on the shore of Kylemore Lough. Since 1920 the estate has been home to a community of Benedictine nuns, who for decades also ran a girls' boarding school there. The grounds also include a Victorian walled garden and a small neo-Gothic church.
