Brú na Bóinne in County Meath's Boyne Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising the great passage tombs of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, built around 5,200 years ago — older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Newgrange is famous for its elaborately carved entrance stone and for the way sunlight briefly enters the burial chamber through a roof-box at the winter solstice sunrise. The wider river landscape along the Boyne is considered one of the densest concentrations of prehistoric monuments in Europe.
